FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A PROVISIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST?

A provisional psychologist is a regulated member of the College of Alberta Psychologists, but is on the provisional register. This means that, with my Master of Science in Counselling Psychology, I have met the strict academic requirements of the College and that I am currently in the process of completing the required 1600 hours of supervised practice. As with all psychologists, provisional psychologists must adhere to a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE FIRST SESSION?

The first session is an opportunity for you to begin telling me your story; that is, what brought you to seek counselling. We talk about your concerns, what you hope to gain, as well as the counselling process moving forward. During this first session, paperwork is also completed. 

HOW LONG ARE SESSIONS?

Counselling sessions are 60-minutes long. This includes time within the hour for booking and billing. 90-minute sessions are available by request. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) sessions are 90-minutes long.

WHAT IS YOUR RATE?

Our rate is $180.00 – 200.00 per 60-minute counselling session. This rate is the same whether for in- office, telephone, or video sessions.

ART and PE rates are $280 – 300.00 per 60-90-minute session.

Fees are to be paid in full by credit card or e-transfer at the end of each session. You can learn more about fee schedules on the Psychologists Association of Alberta’s website .

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?

The number of sessions required differs between individuals and is dependent on aspects such as the nature of concerns, work done outside of sessions, and motivation for change. Furthermore, whether trauma approaches are also used. We understand that external factors, including scheduling and cost, can affect attendance. Therefore, we aim to work with each client to meet their specific needs.

IS WHAT I DISCLOSE CONFIDENTIAL?

What you disclose is confidential. Prior to starting therapy, at the beginning of the first session, we will review confidentiality, including how any information cannot be shared without your written permission. There are, however, three exceptions (limits) where we have an obligation to report and would be required to break confidentiality:

  1. If we suspect abuse or neglect of a vulnerable person such as a child, dependent adult, or elderly person.

  2. If you are at risk of harm to yourself or someone else.

  3. If we receive a court subpoena to access my files.

DO YOU PROVIDE A SLIDING FEE SCALE?

We offer a sliding scale for those facing financial barriers. Please contact your therapist directly to discuss further.

DO YOU DIRECT BILL TO INSURANCE?

We are able to direct bill to Alberta Blue Cross and Medavie Blue Cross (Tiffany Beks only). We also provide a receipt for psychological services paid, which may be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. Coverage and the amount reimbursed will depend on your plan. Fees not reimbursed can be deducted as medical expenses on your income tax return.

DO YOU HAVE A CANCELLATION POLICY?

We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. The policy is that if a session is canceled with less than 24-hours’ notice, or missed, then the full session fee of $180.00 must be paid. Additionally, payment must be received prior to rescheduling another appointment.
